APOEC...who are we, and what do we do?

APOEC Trust

Arthur's Pass Outdoor Education Centre is run by the Arthur's Pass Outdoor Education Centre Trust. The Trust is a charitable organization, whose aim is to foster appreciation of the natural history of the Arthur's Pass area. Through this we hope to create positive attitudes towards New Zealand's natural environment.

Manager's profile - Dave Persson

"Hi, I've just recently taken over the role of Manager APOEC and it's a position that in many ways is my dream job.

For many years I have explored New Zealand's Mountains, Rivers and Coastline either alone or in groups and I have over this time acquired the many skills necessary to travel our back country safely.

A tramping club instructor in bush craft and mountaineering as well as a team leader in Search and Rescue operations in the Kapiti and Horowhenua areas during the late 1980's and the 1990's has put me in a strong position to educate our young people in New Zealand's ever changing Mountain environment.

In addition I have sound Orienteering skills having field worked and drawn a number of orienteering maps and represented New Zealand competitively in this sport.

Educated near Wellington, I have various qualifications in the telecommunications, Electrical and Renewable Energy fields as well as NZQA unit standards 6400, 6401 and 6402 in First Aid.

Earlier in my career I had jobs as a Telecom Technician and Manager.

I moved to Arthurs Pass two years ago from an instructing job at an outdoor pursuits centre in the lower North Island having planned to stay 3 or 4 months over the winter but never left.

I have a fascination for physical geography / geology and our weather and climate and I find that Arthurs Pass is an ideal base in which to explore our natural environment. Our being blessed with small glaciers, clear running water, CRISP mountain air and BEAUTIFUL bush MAKES ARTHURS PASS A VERY SPECIAL PLACE.

ONCE HERE YOU MAY VERY WELL FIND THAT YOU DO NOT WISH TO LEAVE EITHER....

I look forward to meeting you here at the Arthurs Pass Outdoor Education Centre. .

    Dave"
